'Ensuring tenants can pay their rent isn't controversial'

Retiring landlords Fergus and Judith Wilson (main image) have told LandlordZONE that their no-nonsense approach to managing tenants and properties shouldn't be seen as controversial.

The couple have shared pages of email exchanges with happy tenants, providing more evidence that their reputation in some parts of the media is unfounded.

As the landlord pair wind up their property business – once thought to total nearly 1,000 properties around Kent – they have detailed conversations with tenants who are grateful when they have had boilers or cookers fixed promptly.

“I just wanted to say, thank you so much for sorting the heating. You are marvellous,” says one. Another tenant thanks them for allowing her to park her car on one of their empty property’s driveways.

Despite receiving an eviction notice, one woman tells them: “We would like to express our gratitude. You were our brilliant landlords in the last seven years and we appreciate all of your help as we get to build up our new life here, in the UK. We could not be here without your support as our landlords.”

Fergus Wilson then wrote to the council’s chief executive to help her get rehoused, and she thanks him after the housing allocation officer makes contact.

Wishing well

Wilson even reconnects with a former tenant years later to check if she has been rehoused by the council and asks after her children. He tells another tenant: “It has been great having you and your family as tenants in many houses as your family has grown up. Both Judith and I wish you the very best in the future. If you need a landlord reference at any time do let me know!”

Fergus Wilson has told LandlordZONE that the label given to him by some parts of the media as the ‘most hated landlord’ in Britain is unfair. The colourful character has been vilified on some online forums and in newspapers during the last decade for his outspoken views but says ensuring tenants can pay the rent shouldn’t be seen as controversial.
