Council demolishes shocking unsafe makeshift homes

demolished buildings

Council workers in Harrow have knocked down three makeshift buildings at the back of a property that were being rented out with dodgy electrics and no proper bathroom or toilet.

During a routine visit, Harrow Council housing enforcement officers found the illegal and dangerous outbuildings - made from plywood and cardboard – in Camrose Avenue, Edgware. The three outbuildings posed serious risks to life including serious fire hazards, unsafe electrics, and exposure to excess cold due to extremely poor insulation and weatherproofing.

The authority says: “We’ve taken action to stop the use of unsafe outbuildings in Edgware. No one should be living in dangerous conditions, and our officers acted quickly to make the site safe. With the site continuing to operate in clear disregard for housing law and the Emergency Prohibition Order, officers had no option but to order for the demolition of the illegal outbuildings which took place this week.”

Alternative

The occupants were supported by the council to find suitable alternative accommodation in the private sector. The cost of the emergency works, totalling £7,500, will be recovered from the property and the council promises to take all necessary enforcement action to ensure the property is properly licensed and brought up to a safe and lawful standard.

Calvin McLean, director of environment, adds: “No one should ever live like this. What our officers found was appalling and we are grateful to officers acting swiftly to put an end to the use of these illegal outbuildings. We will continue to take action against anyone putting lives at risk. Residents are encouraged to report suspected illegal or unsafe accommodation so the council can act quickly.”
