Technology has taken over nearly every aspect of our everyday lives, including how we choose to secure our homes. Following recent tests carried out by Hilton UK, smartphones could soon replace card keys as the way for guests to access the hotel chain’s luxurious rooms. Smart locks are quickly becoming a crucial part of the technological evolution, but are they the best type of lock you can have for your door?
How do smart locks work?
As smart locks are automated versions of physical locks, the lock mechanism can be engaged electronically or remotely. Smart locks are operated electronically, requiring a different interaction between the user and the lock. As smart locks are controlled electronically, they do not require a physical key, but are activated through fobs, cards or apps.
By contrast, physical locks are manually operated, and come in many different types such as deadbolts, mortice locks, rim locks, pin tumbler locks, and knob locks. The mortice lock has been singled out by security companies as being one of the best types of door locks, as it can be locked on both sides of the door, giving you extra security.
Smart security and physical security combine
The August Smart Lock is a keyless device which allows you to unlock your door using your smartphone, converting your existing deadbolt into a smart lock without having to replace the entire thing. The latest version of the August Smart Lock works with Apple Home Kit – an home automation platform which controls smartphone products from iOS apps and Siri voice commands.
The Kevo smart lock is also smartphone-powered, accessible via bluetooth. A key function of this is smartlock is that when you are outside with your phone, Kevo will recognise you approaching your front door, and it will unlock when touched. Unlike the August system, Kevo comes with a key for back-up, proving that there is no substitute for a physical lock.
Why physical locks will always be the best type of lock for your door
Of course, physical locks have been around for centuries, which means customers will know to choose a brand that they can trust. Physical locks can always be stepped up to improve security. There are many different types and they can be enhanced by using solid metal strike plates and longer deadbolt throws.
Some might argue that smart locks are the most important part of a truly “connected home”, and that they are the future of home security. Today, more and more of us are using smart locks in our homes, and the devices are now becoming more affordable for the average consumer.
Smart locks are an innovative reminder of how far technology has come. But, you can still have the ultimate peace of mind that your home is safe and secure with the best physical lock possible.©LandlordZONE® – legal content applies primarily to England and is not a definitive statement of the law, always seek professional advice.
