Increasing numbers of retirees are stepping off the property ladder to rent

19 January 2016 – Girlings Retirement Rentals, the market leader in retirement rentals, is experiencing a busy start to 2016 as more retirees make it their New Year’s Resolution to downsize this year.

The company experienced an increase in enquiries in 2015 with the most sought after locations for retirement apartments being in the south of England.

The top five locations were Bournemouth, London, Cheltenham, Eastbourne and Portsmouth.

Peter Girling, Chairman, Girlings comments: “We had a significant uplift in the number of retired people looking downsize and rent on long-term tenancies last year and we expect demand to continue being strong throughout 2016.

“Many people in their 60s and 70s want to step off the property ladder and rent. Some no longer want the financial burden of home ownership and others want a fresh start – the chance to live in a new place and in a community with people of a similar age. Many are thinking ahead and planning a home that will be appropriate for their needs as they get older,” adds Mr Girling.

Girlings has over 2500 retirement apartments across the UK to suit all budgets, locations and aspirations, with the majority of properties offered on an assured or ‘lifetime’ tenancy basis. This security of tenure gives older people reassurance they can remain in their homes for as long as they choose as the landlord cannot give notice provided the terms of the tenancy agreement are adhered to.

For those who long to retire by the sea, there is Sefton Court – a stunning Georgian style property in Dawlish in ever popular Devon. These newly refurbished one bedroom apartments are ideal for coastal lovers who also like the convenience of a town as both are in short walking distance. One bedroom apartments at Sefton Court start from £745 per month on an assured tenancy, with services and property maintenance included.

For those who fancy the Welsh valleys, Homevalley House in Newport in South Wales is another popular development. With easy access to all of Newport’s facilities, these bright, one-bed apartments start from £525 per calendar month on an assured tenancy, also with services and property maintenance included.

Peter Girling says: “We have stylish apartments to suit all budgets available in some amazing locations. It usually takes four weeks for your tenancy to start once you’ve reserved  the property and we support our clients throughout the whole process. Whether people wish to live totally independently or have a degree of support, settle by the sea or live in a rural idyll, we are likely to have a property that fits the bill.”

The services of the development and property maintenance costs are included in the monthly rental charges enabling effective budgeting.

The majority of properties are located in purpose built developments where facilities include a Residents’ Lounge, laundry and gardens, a development manager on site to support residents and there is a 24 emergency call system in each property in case of emergency.
