An education charity has secured a £1.25 million awards from the National Lottery to help landlords operate more energy efficient homes.
Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK) has partnered with fuel poverty charity National Energy Action to increase awareness among landlords around current legislation and the energy efficiency solutions available.
Its initiative - SEAL (Student Energy Action for Life) – also aims to empower both university students and landlords with the tools and knowledge they need to drive meaningful change.
It explains: “SEAL recognises the unique challenges students face when transitioning from their family homes to the private rented sector. Often, these young tenants are left without the support and guidance needed to make informed decisions about energy efficiency, leaving them vulnerable to higher energy costs and environmentally harmful housing options.”
SEAL will also work to improve access to energy-efficient properties in the student housing market by engaging with landlords across the UK, providing education, advice, and help to encourage investment in energy-efficient upgrades.
It adds: “By fostering collaboration between students, landlords, and other stakeholders, SEAL aims to create a ripple effect of positive change in the PRS, ultimately reducing carbon emissions and improving living standards for thousands of students.”
SOS-UK aims to engage with students in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Swansea, and Worcester, in areas with high concentrations of students and inefficient housing stock.
The charity is running a free training session for student property landlords on energy efficiency on 26th August at Swansea University. It will cover practical ways to increase energy efficiency in rental properties, marketing energy efficiency as a benefit for tenants and landlords’ role in the transition to a smart energy system.
