More high-profile landlord groups, insurance firms and associations have backed the Heads for Tails! campaign which is pushing the government to reverse its decision on pet damage insurance.
Addept Group, the Cornwall Landlords Association, The Letting Partnership, The Lettings Industry Council and Total Landlord Insurance have all got behind the campaign, along with the Independent Landlord Suzanne Smith, property lawyer David Smith, Kevin Davidson-Hall from the private rented sector community on LinkedIn, and pet theft reform campaigner Dr Dan Allen.
The campaign – originally launched in September 2021 - was supported by more than 80 MPs, peers and corporate organisations.
Founder Jen Berezai says: “I’m pleased to say that none of the original supporting organisations have asked for their name to be removed from our list of supporters for Heads for Tails! The Reboot, and even more delighted to welcome the new supporters".
She adds that there will be an even more impressive line-up by the end of August, in time for when the Renters’ Rights Bill returns for its consultation process between the House of Commons and the House of Lords on 8th September.
Before the summer recess, the House of Lords voted against the pet damage insurance provision for landlords, citing potential high costs and the readiness of the insurance industry for “enquiries at scale”. Instead, peers voted for a separate pet deposit of three weeks’ worth of rent, which is geographically disproportionate, argues Berezai.
She intends to submit an open letter to the Secretary of State for Housing Angela Rayner and the Minister of State for Housing Matthew Pennycook on 1st September, which will accompany a briefing paper explaining why pet damage insurance is the common-sense solution to the lack of pet friendly rentals and is the favoured option of both tenants and landlords.
