London Renters Union protested against “slumlords” in the capital at the weekend, calling for housing justice for all.
About 100 people marched through the streets as part of Global Day of Housing Action and rallied outside the Shoreditch offices of estate agent Foxtons where speakers told protestors that slumlords were international.
They said: “Mouldy homes, evictions, the denial of safe and secure housing for black people, migrants, and those facing poverty is an international issue.
“Globally we will not stop until we bring them down and there is global housing justice for all. The Labour government don’t care about us, they don’t care about renters, they don’t care about the working class, black or brown people, the vulnerable, the sick, the disabled.”
The union cites “global enemies” and says while ordinary people are forced to leave their neighbourhoods, multinational corporate giants are given the keys to the city.
Spokesperson Jae Vail told The Morning Star: “Labour was elected on a platform of fixing the housing crisis, but under its leadership, the crisis has only deepened. The government has allowed massive corporations from across the world to tighten their stranglehold on our communities, turning our homes into assets for their balance sheets, and destroying the soul of our city in the process.
“Across the world, tenants are taking mass action and winning lower rents. We must continue to come together in our communities to demand an end to the profiteering and a housing system that works for everybody.”
London Renters Union wants the Government to implement urgent rent controls and reinvest in social housing. However, the Government has repeatedly said that it doesn’t support rent controls, which are not in the Renters’ Rights Bill, despite attempts to add amendments to the legislation.
