The Mayor of London has written to more than 47 private landlords and four social landlords demanding that they urgently remove dangerous aluminium composite materials (ACM) cladding.

Three years after the Grenfell Tower disaster, the letter reminds building owners who have had funding applications approved but haven’t started work to, “take all the necessary steps to accelerate your plans to remove and replace unsafe ACM cladding”.

It’s not known who they are though, as a spokesman at the Mayor’s Office tells LandlordZONE: “We are unable to release the list of companies receiving these letters for safety reasons and to protect residents. In many cases, these buildings are owned by companies whose name would identify the building so we cannot share them publicly.”

Unsafe cladding

In the letter, Sadiq Khan tells the landlords: “I am deeply worried to see the number of buildings in London that still have unsafe aluminium composite materials (ACM) cladding. Given the high risk that unsafe ACM presents to residents and visitors, it is unacceptable that remediating buildings is taking so long.

“I am sure you will agree that providing residents with real certainty, clear progress and a firm date for the completion of these works is vital. I therefore urge you to take all the necessary steps to accelerate your plans to remove and replace unsafe ACM cladding.”

The Mayor is also calling on the Government to take action and cover the costs of ‘waking watch’ and other interim fire safety measures in ACM-clad buildings, as well as to clarify what enforcement mechanisms will be available to penalise building owners who fail to make their building safe and to put more resources into the joint inspection team.

So far, 65 buildings owned by social landlords have been allocated funding from the Government’s Social and Private Sector ACM Cladding Remediation Funds, while 60 buildings owned by private sector landlords have applied for financial help.
