Landlady, her partner and two accomplices are given jail terms totalling 70 years after eviction in Essex goes horribly wrong.

A landlady and her friends have been jailed for killing a private tenant in Southend during an “eviction gone wrong” when he was stabbed in the leg and left to die.

Ian Slater, 50 of Wayletts, Leigh-on-Sea, and Alex Stephens, 36, of Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff, will both serve a minimum of 26 years for murdering Courtney Valentine-Brown, while landlady Kelly King, 31, of Roots Hall Drive, Southend, and Stuart Pearson, 44, of Satanita Road, Westcliff, were each handed nine years in prison for manslaughter.

The trial at Basildon Crown Court heard how a dispute over a debt led King to ask her partner Slater to help evict Mr Valentine-Brown, 36, from his property.

Slater then recruited the other two men. The four had gone to King’s flat in Roots Hall Drive on 21 February, armed with weapons to get her tenant to leave.

During the ensuing struggle, Stephens stabbed Mr Valentine-Brown through the femoral artery in his leg. He suffered massive blood loss and later died from his injuries.

All four had denied murder, with Stephens claiming he had acted in self-defence. They had alleged it was an “eviction gone wrong” and that they never intended to hurt anyone.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector, Daniel Stoten, said afterwards: “Slater, King, Stephens and Pearson acted together to confront [the victim]. Slater and Stephens armed themselves – a clear indication of their intent to cause harm. “Their callous and cowardly actions have left another family devastated as a result of knife crime.”

  1. Obviously this is a tragic event but if the stupid courts and legal system would move faster to carry out lawful evictions then perhaps people would not be tempted to do it themselves. And this idiot government’s ending of Section 21 will only exacerbate the situation.

  2. The reason that the courts cannot sort this is that whole mess is that they are simply not up to the task and no amount of training or experience will compensate for the lack of judgement.

  3. She wasn’t a ‘landlady’, her flat had been taken over by the deceased and his friend as part of a County Lines drug dealing operation. It’s called ‘cuckooing’.

I blame the court process and the systematic eradication of landlords rights for people taking drastic measures like this into their own hands, being a private landlord in these times has to be one of the hardest jobs around you have very little rights often abused by local council officials in the case of h/b and u/c and tenants who know they can get away with just about anything they are often paying mortgages and more often than not can’t make the payments if that are not in receipt of any rent ? often people have bought property as a top up for an inadequate pension and have very little other income it’s about time the government adopted a policy of assisting these people rather than constantly throwing spanner’s in the works.

  5. I totally agree, the system to evict legally needs fixing to make it fare for tenant AND Landlord.
    The cost time and the stress to evict is too much!. So I decided it would be better to give the tenant the money rather than pay the Authorites who are making money at the cost of both tenant and Lanlord . So I paid my tenants deposit and her costs to leave quickly and help her out to pay a deposit for her to move in to somewhere els , I repaired the damages she left in the property and re rented the property quickly as the demand was high .
    The New tenants who rents with his family was properly vetted and in full employment. I have had no issues with them for the last 3years.
