Eight years on from tradgedy, Grenfell Tower to be taken down

The government has vowed to carefully dismantle Grenfell Tower behind its white outer wrapping to “respect the unique circumstances of the tragedy and significance of the building”.

Eight years after the fire ripped through the high-rise building and killed 72 people – many of them social and private tenants - it says all work at the site will be considerate and minimise disruption for those living, studying and working nearby.

Organised by Deconstruct UK, this will start at the top and progress down floor by floor, with each floor expected to take about a month to take down. Wooden fencing around the site will prevent anyone from looking inside.

Smaller parts of the tower will be brought down inside the building while larger parts such as external columns will be removed in sections and taken down in covered containers outside of the building by crane.

Personal significance

In an update, the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government says it recognises that Grenfell Tower has a deep personal significance to those most affected by the tragedy and that the land is sacred to families.

It promises to make elements from the tower and site available for inclusion as features in the memorial.

“We will sensitively remove, preserve and safely store the architectural crown and the elements of the tower agreed with the community as we carefully take the building down. Everything that is removed from the tower will be loaded onto unmarked lorries and carefully covered before being removed from the site.”

It adds: “We are currently talking to bereaved families and survivors about the second site, separate to the memorial site in North Kensington, where we propose materials from the tower will be respectfully laid to rest.”
