Pervert landlord Peter Woolls spied on girl students in the shower with a secret camera he hid in the bathroom of their buy to let home.
Woolls, 55, a married father of five, advertised his buy to let home at Wivenhoe, Colchester, near the campus of Essex University for girls only.
The student tenants became suspicious about Woolls when he made regular visits to a locked shed in the garden.
The girls reported their suspicions and a search of the bathroom revealed a wireless camera the size of a small pin which transmitted a view of the shower to a monitor in the shed.
Despite the sophisticated set-up, police found no evidence that Woolls taped the girls naked in the bathroom.
However, prosecutor John Caudle explained the wi-fi equipment was capable of sending a live feed of anyone using the bathroom to Woolls in the shed.
Woolls admitted a charge of voyeurism at Chelmsford Crown Court, where he was given a 123-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £1,000 costs and put on the sex offenders’ register.
Judge Anthony Goldstaub QC said: “I don’t condone in any way what you did in fitting a pinhole camera in the shower area but it seems to me your mitigating circumstances are considerable.
“I have no doubt that with treatment and your wife’s support you will not reoffend.”
Woolls claimed to have bought the hidden camera for security purposes but admitted he installed it in the bathroom for his own sexual gratification.
Charles Conway, mitigating, said his client had been seeing a counsellor ever since the incident.
He told the court: “There was no evidence whatsoever of recording. He has been addressing his problems with a counsellor.
“He feels an enormous sense of remorse and guilt for the upset he has caused to people in the property and this will never happen again.”
