Gavin Barwell will be taking over from Brandon Lewis as Minister for Housing, Planning and London. MP for Croydon Central Barwell has joined the team at Department for Communities and Local Government led by Sajid Javid, who was appointed Communities Secretary last week.
Brandon Lewis now becomes Minister of State for Policing and the Fire Service after serving as Housing Minister for the last 2 years.
Barwell, who was educated at the Trinity School of John Whitgift, Croden, and Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating in 1993, was employed by the Conservative Central Office in a number of roles between 1993 and 2010.
He also held various parliamentary private secretary roles, including to the Minister of State for Decentralisation and Planning Policy and Secretary of State for Education, and has more recently been Assistant Government Whip and Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury.
The Conservative MP posted on Twitter that he was “hugely honoured” to have been asked to serve in this senior post by the new Prime Minister Theresa May.
“Looking forward to working with councils, housing associations, developers and investors to ensure we build the homes people need and deserve.
“And to working with the Mayor of London to ensure the continued success of our wonderful diverse capital – and that all Londoners share in it.”
