Landlord uses hidden cameras to spy on tenants

An Edinburgh landlord set-up hidden cameras in the bedroom and bathroom of his flat, to film people in bed and in the shower. The cameras were discovered by a young couple, friends of the landlord who allowed them to use the accommodation. The couple found a box on the living room table with a camera built into it.When they connected it to a laptop they discovered filming of the young woman getting out of the shower, along with footage of other people who had been in the flat.As reported by the Edinburgh Evening News, 39-year old Jonathan Hartwell of McDonald Road, Edinburgh, pleaded guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court to setting up the covert cameras to film and record adult males and females undressing and using the toilet and shower, between May 31 and August 12 last year.Sheriff Gordon Liddle was told by Fiscal Depute, Brian Robertson in court that Hartwell, the landlord of the flat in McDonald Road, had let the man and woman, who were friends of his at the time, use it. Moving in on August 10 they subsequently found a box on the living room table which contained a built-in camera, which could be plugged into a laptop. They contacted the police. On investigation the police discovered two hidden cameras in the bedroom and bathroom which showed images of people asleep in bed, showering and using the toilet. The Fiscal said 'The cameras were set up to watch people in the bedroom and bathroom'Hartwell had been psychiatrically examined and was found to have no psychiatric illness. Jennifer Cameron, Hartwell's defence solicitor, said it was obvious that a background report would be required and she would reserve her plea in mitigation. The Sheriff described Hartwell's actions as: 'nasty voyeurism' and deferred sentence for a background report.Ordering Hartwell to register as a sex offender, he told Hartwell: 'This is a matter which clearly needs careful consideration in order to understand what lay behind this'.
