The operative word is "unobtrusive" - ie better looking than Grand Designs.

My suggestion of velcro and a mitten, or rubber gloves stationed at top and bottom did not go down well.

How about a bucket of water top and bottom to wet the hands; its the dry skin and shiny surface in combination that are the killer

Of course you would need a towel available top and bottom to dry hands off after reaching level ground.

On a serious note have a builder take a look at it for the best option, always better to be safe than sorry. I had an elderly lady suffer terminal injuries from a fall in one of my properties due to a real oak staircase very dangerous when polished.
