I house lots of tenants on benefits, where payments come to me as they are vulnerable tenants

The tenants support workers write the letters to the benefits team and thats enough

Under these circumstances, would payments continue to come to me/ the landlord?

If so, how would they split the Universal Credit, as its an all in one?

Will this universal credit encompass all the benefits seperately? ie. housing benefit + job seekers allowance?

This would have to be the case, for them to have a system to switch benefit payments to the landlord

Also, would the present council's benefit team lose control of the housing benefit party? I've heard the dwp will be in charge of the UC - if so, what purpose would the council benefit team have if any?

Unadulterated Cr%p is not universal (as plans currently stand). Council tax benefit is, I think, separate (anyone?) - whichever it is excluded it is f%tty Pickles' idea.


The chances of UC being implemented in full & on time are small....

I understood they would get 1 monthly payment which will be council tax, housing and there own benefits all in one payment, probably about £1200..................Just enough for a summer holiday for them or to pay for Christmas.

UC is a disaster waiting to happen.

Nope, Council Tax benefit being replaced by "localised" cunning "Council Tax Support" from that cl*wn Pickles that replaces (alledgedly...) from April 2013 all CT benefit, discounts, exemptions etc... see

From April 2013 onwards, local councils will set their own rules to suit the needs of their local area, and will decide which groups of people to help. There will still be some rules set by Government - including help for pensioners.

Under the current system, the Government pays the bill for council tax benefits, discounts, exemptions and reductions. Under the new system, each council will have a pot of money to share out amongst people who may need help. Each council will be able to decide which groups of people it will help and how much help to offer.

The amount of money available to pay for council tax support will be 10 per cent less than for council tax benefit. Local councils won't be able to cut the money they pay to certain pensioners, so may have less money to help people of working age on low incomes in their areas.

£5 to a suitable housing charity if all council implement this seamlessly in April 2013...

Slight disagreement hech, think UC is a disaster already happening, and may well be a major nail in Tory election prospects....

Oh yes, and after that, that's when they put in for a social fund grant, and if unlucky enough, get refused but take out a crisis loan instead.l

My view is that if this goes ahead as planned; a single monthly payment to cover all aspects of due benefit; a right mess will ensue. A significant percentage of claimants will not discharge their obligations with their landlord. Landlords will evict. There is a shortage of social housing. Where can the evicted go? Only to the private sector. The private sector will not accept them because of poor/ non-existant references. No government can allow swathes of people (families with children; at least) to be sleeping rough on the streets.

The only solution? Back into the private sector, with some type of governmental guarantee of payment. In other words, back to where we are now; but with a right financial mess left behind.

Actually, in terms of principles, I agree with empowering benefits recipients. However, in practical terms, it will be a disaster. Social and financial irresponsibility isn't limited to a tiny minority of the population. The actions of governments; the previous one in particular; have made sure that this is a significant minority.
