How do I check a potential tenants credit?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but after my agent disappointed on my two previous tenants I'm thinking of doing it myself. But how do I check a potential tenants credit history?

Try:

a. Experian or Equifax (commercial credit-reference agencies) PLUS confirmation of creditworthiness/trustworthiness from:
i. T's previous L;
ii. T's bank etc; and
iii. T's employer (if any); or

b. MARAS (insurer which offers a package of referencing plus tenant guarantee, so no need for you to take any deposit at all).
