I need your help. I have accepted to rent a flat and I'll go to sign the contract in the next few days. However, I'm concerned about it: the landlord wants to sign the contract 3 days before the flat is available, which means that I have to give him the deposit and one month rent before I get the keys. I'm affraid to be dealing with no honest people and don't get the keys. How can secure tha he is the really owner of the flat and that I'll really get the flat. Should I contract a lawyer? I don't know...
I really appreciate some help. I really don't know what to do....

Thank you

To check his ownership: use HM Land Registry website ("Land Registry Online") and obtain copy of his registered title.

If LL is genuine, he will not mind waiting three days and signing and handing keys over the same day. The best thing to do is to meet at the property itself --- this will give you one final chance to check it over.

The LL is probably genuine but I advise caution. Have you been to see the property with him?

Most LL's will not hand over the keys until your money is cleared in their account, unless you give cash or a bankers draft. If you are not prepared to do this then you will find it hard to rent.

As suggested, check land registry that the name tallys. If the LL does not "feel right" find another place to live.
