The currency in the UK is, and has always been, the pound sterling (written £).
Who then invented the bastardised version "GBP" and why? Don't all keyboards, the world over, have a £ symbol? Even in the USA, they do- and I understand that, just as we use $ as a typographical 'insert here' command, Americans use £ to like effect.
I bet it was those evil europeans (boo hiss) and their EUR taking the place of a euro symbol (which, I'm glad to say, my keyboard does omit).

Mine doesn't €€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€₠¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â ‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬â‚¬ :D

Besides GBP is used in other countries that also use the pound as their currency. example CYP as in the Cyprus pound.

If all countries just used £ then we wouldn't know what amount was meant.

It could be due to currency trading being the get rich quick scheme du jour.

Currency trading pairs are quoted as GBP/USD, USD/JPY, AUD/USD and so on.

Just a guess.

YES/NOO, LHW/LGW, SEE/SAW, etc?
Anyway, I know what I mean by £. The only pounds that I don't like are the circumferential ones around my tum.
And why do Americans weigh in pounds but not stones?

Speaking of currency symbols, does anyone know how to make my Oz keyboard print "£"? (<== This one having been copied and pasted)

Perhaps you need to turn it downside-up?
I think that using SHIFT, CTRL, ALT, HOME, END, TAB, and INSERT keys (or F keys, if present)- in various combinations- may open up a whole different range of keys' effects. My home computer has a manual which tells how to obtain Greek, Russian, scientific symbols, foreign-accented letters, etc.

Oh... the manual...

Only as a last resort. :)
