These guys (Joslin Rhodes www.joslinrhodes.co.uk (http://www.joslinrhodes.co.uk)) did my conveyancing.

I found them via the web, used their website to get a quote as to how much it would cost me, and then completed a form.

They sent me some info in the post, and it went from there.

The good thing about them apart from the fact that they're fairly local to me anyway, was that I was very much concious of the fact that they supplied plenty of contact methods - phone, fax, email etc. - which if anything had gone wrong (it didn't!) I felt I could fall back on to speak to a human about things.

Best of both worlds! Convenience from the online application, and the security of knowing I could instruct them over the phone (or even in person).

1. Ensure that firm is a solicitors' practice (so Law Society supervised).
2. Not as good as meeting a named individual responsible for your transaction.
3. Certain items (esp. Contract, Transfer deed, Mortgage deed) will need to be hard copies for execution.
4. Print off all electronic communications on receipt (and keep hard copies of those that you send) for evidential purposes. Similarly, make immediate hard copy notes (dated and timed) of all telephne conversations.

Some of the online quotes are very competitive. As previous poster said - consider the means of contact. If you can contact someone outside 9-5, that's a bonus.

However, a few of these companies will only advertise a non-geographic number eg 0845 or 0870 - if you're on an unlimited landline calls package with say BT or Talk Talk, or unlimited mobile minutes, these non geo's are not included and you will get billed on top of your set monthly bill for non-geo calls. Some 0845s are advertised as 'local' but this is virtually meaningless and has been for some time.

Also the non-geos can be horrendously expensive from mobiles - I believe up to 40p min can be normal for 0870.

Please see www.saynoto0870.co.uk if you haven't a clue how we're all being ripped off or what the heck I'm going on about!

Thanks for the replies

But would I not require a witness, as everything is done by post?

Contract does not need witnessing.
Deeds do - eg Transfer and any Mortgage.

So, Online Conveyancing is really a false economy :(

In most cases, yes.
And see "DIY Conveyancing" thread too.

What I liked about the online conveyancing company I used (http://www.oneillpatient.com/services_conveyancing.asp) is that they have online case notes that summarise the progress.

you tend to know exactly what steps have been completed and when others are due so get a good overview of where you are in the lifecycle.

you can also submit queries to the online case and get a response so there's a good audit trail of communication in one place.

That, for me, is much preferable to the usual situation of a traditional small local solicitors where you have to beg and coax responses and updates out of them and don't get a good idea of the stages involved in the Conveyancing process and where you are with them.
