Hi,
I have 6 properties which I insure with 1 broker based insurance company. Last thursday during the high winds one of my properties suffered £2000 worth of roof damage.
when I called the broker they said to fix that which is emergency (they could not give me a definition of emergency) and fill out a claim form with 2 quotes.
I have sent in the form and 2 quotes and have instrusted a builder to secure the roof - becuase a significant amount of tiles were blown off leaving big holes in the celing - to stop any further damage the celining had to be repaied.
Now a week on I get a call from the insurance companies surveyour asking if I have sent in the quotes. I told them that i had and they said that once they rcieve that their surveyour would be around to inspect the property. So, I informed them that i had to repair the roof to stop any further damage - which they responded by saying that it could invalidate the claim.
Now where do I stand!!! any advise?
Sorry for the long post

The broker should helping you not causing Problems!!! I would advise a client to just get enough work done to avoid the damage getting worse. I must admit that the dodgy tradesmen tend to come out of the woodwork after storm claims to try for a quick killing so insurers are wary! But feel the broker should get involved Mention complaining to the Financial Service Authority the broker should change tune then if you need more help contact me Neil email specialist@deliteinsurance.co.uk
Good luck

Hi,
It is a difficult scenario when a property becomes unsecure pending damage from a claimable event.
The insurer may insist on inspecting all of the damage, which means that you should not repair it before it can be inspected, however in the event of a property being left unsecure then it is often unavaiodable to do some essential repair to stop further damage. A good insurer will understand this.
Many insurance companies have claims departments with 24 hr helplines and recommended tradesman which can often resolve a situation much quicker. The recommended tradesman then bill the insurer who can pay them directly.
In summary, some insurers deal with claims a lot more efficiently than others, find out exactly what your insurer will allow you to do and what help they offer if you have an urgent claim.
