Do I really need to have all receipts to be able to claim this from taxman if I have travelled recently to view the condition of my rented accommodation?
Someone told me that unless I can prove that the travelling expenses are solely for this purpose of viewing the letting I stand no chance in having them approved. I am now worried and don't know what or how I can prove ..

Under self-assessment, the onus is on the taxpayer to decide by themselves what the correct position is. It is only if and when you are challenged, you should be able to substantiate the entries in your tax return to the satisfaction of HMR&C inspector.
As far as viewing trips are concerned, you would normally be claiming on the basis of mileage allowance at the approved mileage rates. So long as you have a record of the trip and the distance travelled, I would have thought this should be sufficient.
For mileage allowance claims, there is no need to keep any receipts for petrol etc.
Does this answer your query?

Unless the amount claimed is large, I don't think there should be any problem.
