Water Softener Furred Up

My Chinese tenants moved out last week.

Unfortunately they were unable to read the label on the cupboard that said water softener, or the instructions I sent them to put salt in it. The 12 bags of salt I delivered over the months are still there.

The softener now no longer softens even with salt in it. It is one of these plastic ones that takes two blocks of salt. I would guess that the water metering system is furred up with hard water.

Has anyone ever taken one of these apart to de-scale it? Is it possible to do yourself, or should I call a professional?

Buy one of those electronic ones that coil around the supply pipe. You can't trust tenants to do anything really - even if they are English!

I descaled an old Harper unit years ago but they could be completely dismantled - hence why they wewent out of business, too many leaks - most modern units are sealed.
