I have a flat in a purpose built block and plan to rent it out unfurnished on an Assured Shorthold Tenancy. The block is insured by the managing company.
What insurance should I take out and what should it cover ?
Cheers

You need 'Landlord' insurance which covers your tenents for any accidents or injuries that they incur in your property where you could be held to be at fault (loose stair carpet etc), public liability insurance (same cover for anyone visiting the property). You may also need employee liability insurance if you pay someone to do work on the property, and lastly - contents insurance (depending on the level of furnishing - ie it may be unfurnished but are you providing cooker, fridge/freezer, washer/drier etc).
Have a look at the Rentguard (www.rentguard.org) which offers a single policy - "Landlords Household Insurance" - to cover all the above, and optional building cover as well if required. I got a discount on this policy as an RLA member, and it cost £52.50pa including £5000 contents. Also, look at Letsure which offers similar.
Lastly - your solicitor should have verified that the building itself is insured as part of the purchase process. Worth checking that they did so.

The public liability for the buildings should be covered by the block policy.
If you are renting the flat as furnished i would reccomend Landlords contents insurance. Liability insurance for contents normally needs to be purchased as an extension to the contents policy.
You may also wish to consider legal expenses and rent guarantee insurance these can be purchased from UKinsuranceNET.
