These gadgets fitted on the water line ahead of the boiler are supposed to reduce lime deposits on the heat exchanger which in turn is said to improve the efficiency of the boiler.

As they only cost £25 or so each the tendency is to fit them, but I have no idea if they really work, or indeed the relative merits of the slightly cheaper magnetic ones as compared to the electrolytic models or indeed if one type is better for conventional and the other for condensing boilers

Assuming the water quality in the locality to be fairly hard, does anyone know if they really are the boon they are claimed to be by the suppliers?

I live in a very hard water area and have had some very expensive kit fitted for this purpose including a water filter inline at the mains entry and a fancy tap that should remove anything else at the kitchen sink. None of this has stopped my kettle getting scale and a heat exchanger being replaced on a 3 years old Glow Worm Ultra boiler.

I know of 2 others with Glow Worm boilers who have had the same trouble. Is yours that make?

My gas person insists I can do no more to combat scale and that I should see an improvement - I don't agree with his expectations.

I had a limefighter like Interlaken too. That was a waste of money as it did not do anything. The thing to get is a water softener. I put one in each of my rental properties, and some of the tenants actually put in the salt I deliver free of charge!
