Hi there,

I moved to NZ two years ago - last year i did a self assessment for my property, because I was living in the UK during the tax year I was assessing. Plus I was only on a working holiday visa, and not sure how long i'd stay in NZ

However, i'm now resident of NZ, and wasn't in the UK during the 2009-2010 tax year.

I don't think I have to do a tax return - instead I have to declare earnings to NZ IRD.

Do I have to inform Inland Rev of my non residents status? if so - how?

cheers

Jon

Your tenant is committing an offence by not withholding 20% of his gross rent and paying it to HMRC. You need a certificate from HMRC to confirm rent can be paid gross. And you still need to complete a UK return as you have a place of business in the UK.

Just download the NRL1 Form, complete your detqails and airmail to HMRC. You will have to send a tax return after each 5th April , but you should still get the annual personal allowance of 6475 pds (with UK or EEC passport ).

we already completed the form to avoid the 20% tax when we left the UK. So basically, I just do the self assessment as per normal?

The Tax Office should have sent you a reply letter to confirm that your letting agent or tenant can pay rent money into your bank account without deduction of tax.

The TO should also have sent a SA105 ? Tax Return for 09/10 to your home address in NZ in April or May as the deadline date was 31st Oct 2010.( late returns may be subject to 100 pds penalty ). If you have not received the return, ask them to send another .

Hi there, thanks for your help.

Our letting agent did get the letter to confirm that they can pay rent money into your bank account without deduction of tax.

However, the tax return was sent to my parents address in the UK (as I put that address down when i started travelling, becuase i didn't know where or how long I was going for!), and on this letter they said the date is 31st oct for paper, and Jan for online.

I guess what I will do is complete online this year, and then change my address and make sure they know i'm living in NZ from now on.

31 January for online filing.

Sounds like you've done the right things, but you still need to complete a UK tax return and pay tax - subject (subject to qualifying) to the personal allowance.
