Hi all ive just moved into a shared house with my boyfriend and before i moved in another guy also used to rent a room. He has since left at the beginning of June and as far as we know he has left the country.

He has been receiving a lot of mail from various credit companies (i recognize the types of letters from experience) and im worried now that he may owe a lot of money to these people. So far we have just been returning the letters back to the sender marking the envelope as him no longer living here at this address. My question is that if it carried on and got to the stage where the companies called the bailiffs out then where do me, my boyfriend and our other housemate stand as obviously the things in our rooms are our property and we dont want them taken away for someone elses debt just because its in the property he lived in.

I dont know much about these matters so please id appriciate some help

If it gets as far as bailiffs, the bailiff cannot remove goods which do not belong to the debtor.

That’s all you can do, they are as you say personal bills, therefore not your responsibility, if the bailiffs or anyone else calls, show them your passport or some other form of identity if necessary, to prove that you are not the debtor
