I'm currently carrying out some maintenance on my house prior to letting it out. I realise that these costs can be offset against the rental income (for tax purposes).

What I wanted to know is will the invoices from those doing the work be sufficient, or will I also need to request a receipt after I have made the payment?

Invoice will be fine. Make sure it has the tradesman's address and telephone number on it, just to be sure.

Thanks for that. I take it the invoice isn't actually sent with the tax return, but just needs to be kept as proof?

Yes.
