I am sure there must be something a bit more high-tech than a measuring tape and a copy of Visio such as a gadget you put in the middle of a room and it quickly scans the entire room to produce some kind of electronic image that can be quickly edited to produce final result. I am making this up now but you get the idea :-)

Ruler, pencil and graph paper?
I have a nice ruler with the dates of the reigns of all the kings and queens of England on. I would use one like that.

They do a pay as you go service, you can do a rough sketch, send them the details and they will put it together for you.

How is my signature line spam?
The signature allows a comment and a web url to your homepage.
URL's are blocked until a user has posted more than 15 times - which prevents most automated spam.
I posted a relevant response to the question, so how is this spam?

There is a computer program called 'room arranger' which comes with a free 30 day trial
http://www.roomarranger.com/gallery.html
It is quite simple to use, but the end results are 'basic'.

Something like photomodeler.com
But you would end up with a 3D model rather than a floor plan.

Many Thanks all. I am still looking (Googling when I have time!) and will feed back what I have found on here. I may be looking for something that does not exist...now then there's a thought :-)
