I have just purchased.a flat in Worksop and was shocked when Bassettlaw Council told me I would not be entitled to any empty property discount as they charge full council tax on empty properties! The property is currently being renovated and is due to be rent out at the end of April, can I do anything about this?

Councils sometimes (usually?) have an exemption for council tax on properties that are being worked on and which are not habitable, usually for 6 months or so.

You should check with your council if they are one of them.

My council also doesn't charge council tax on unoccupied properties if they are also unfurnished, including white goods.

But it may also depend on whether V was claiming empty property relief.

Blame Gordon Brown - it's a national Govt policy. Not surprisingly many empty buildings are simply getting demolished:mad:

It is possible that it has already used up it's 6 months exemption before you bought it.
