Deposit Insurance Schemes

Suprisingly, I haven't been able to find much on this forum via a search. Could some kind soul point me to a thread about it or alternatively my question is:

I've read somewhere (can't remember where!) good things about schemes whereby rather than pay a full deposit the tennants can pay for insurance which covers the landlord for damages, non payment of rent etc.

Are these schemes recommended?

Also, I was going to take out MARAS insurance against non payment of rent. Would these schemes duplicate that?
