Getting reference

Hi there just a quick question, what is the correct way of getting a reference from my soon to be tenants landlord?

Three options:

Give them a call
Visit them
Write to them

Remember, if a landlord has had a bad experience with his tenant, and you the new landlord come along for a reference, human nature says you're likely to get a good glowing reference regardless!
Therefore don't rely on one reference alone.
