Any ideas people - looking for research method to try and ascertain the demand for HMO property in specific areas. For me this is Guildford, Farnham, Aldershot areas. Anybody got any ideas?

Thought of approaching local authority - do they have lists of HMO's?

Any helpful comments on drilling for this kind of area specific info?

Hi Angela,

Councils have a register of HMOs (the one's that need to be licensed and are licensed as you probably already know not all HMOs need to be) which are available to the public. I just download one for my area, check their website and look under HMO public register.

Have a look at websites like spareroom, easyroommate, gumtree and see what is on offer and what is wanted. It will give you a good idea. It's also good to speak to letting agents in the area, ideally the ones that advertise house shares / rooms. Check out the rental section on rightmove, include "let".

You could even place an ad on a website and test the response, price etc. Another idea is to google the local councils "housing strategy". They have a pretty good idea about future demand.

Hi Angela

We are currently conducting a nationwide research piece for HMO demand in the key sectors of the market.

Once we have finished it, I'll be publishing details on my blog.

It should be ready in about 6 weeks time
