Guarantor and deposit

Hi, my tenant signed a six month contract with me, backed up by a guarantor (his employer). After 4 months he was sacked and the guarantor paid the additional 2 month's rent owing.

My question is, who should I return the deposit to. The original tenant paid the deposit and left ?

I would have thought the person that paid it in the first place.
