Bit of a strange one that I hope you can help me with. My tenant has called to say that she there is an ant infestation at the property. I am happy to deal with it, but was wondering if the council would deem the rental property 'commercial' and therefore not be in a position to send their guys out?

Thanks

IMHO you are O.K. The property is a private dwellinghouse on which said council levy council tax and not an additional business rate. Thus it isn't commercial property. Might it not be cheaper to buy your tenant a bottle of ant killer powder?

Thanks P.P.

She claims to have tried ant powder. I suggested trying a smoke bomb (well thats what I would use), but oh no, she has children and can't have that! Will try to get through to pest control today and see what they have to say.

Thanks

I had an ants infestation in a property I rented. We managed to stop it by:

- putting powder down all around the outside of the house (where they come from) against the wall so they can't climb the walls to access cracks
- sealing any crack (if you can find where they are entering the house from) in the walls, window ledges etc.
- putting little ants catcher things that don't kill the ants immediately but poison the whole colony when "infected" ants go back there

It worked pretty well and didn't cost much.

Thanks

I've now been able to get through to environmental health, and explained the situation. They are happy to go out and deal with the ant issue (contrary to the tenants first thoughts!).
