AST tenant seeks L's consent for sub-letting a room

I have a tenant with an ast. Because the credit crunch they have approached me with a request to sublet a room. I'm happy in principle but I dont want to end up with a sitting tenant that i cant get rid of.

Any advice on what i need to consider. I'm happy with my existing tenant and don't want to loose them if possible.

If your original tenant is staying in the property, the new one becomes his lodger, as such he (the lodger) has no rights of tenure.
