Not strictly the place for a telecoms forum Q but.

You can download a free software programme which enables you to make free calls anywhere in the world on the internet and they're signing up thousands each day. Soon there will be nobody left.

If you haven't come across it yet I'm surprised because even a computer dunce like me knew about it months ago..............and no! I haven't done it yet 'cause I don't even have a sound card or speakers,.........so there!

All internet call are not private and are subject to very bad quality and interference.

The VOIP calls I have made have been excellent quality and free as Paul suggests.Paul your computer will have an integrated soundcard unless it is over twenty years old!All you need is a headset with a microphone to start making calls. If you get a webcam you can see each other on video on instant messaging at the same time. The wonders of modern technology!

What a load of rubbish...

The main downside of the system Paul mentions (if it's the one I'm thinking about) is that you can't receive incoming "calls", you can only "dial out", and both people have to have the software on their PC for it to work for Free.
You can use it to call normal phone lines but then it's not free anymore.

Unless we're not talking about the same software.

The quality depends on internet connection speed.I have no probs with 'dial-in' calls - your 'dial-out' is the other person's 'dial-in'!There are companies that offer free landline to landline calls (no need for a pc) for a connection fee of a few pence although you cannot see the other person for free without a pc and webcam.

By 'dial in' I meant someone with a landline can't call your computer. Obviously you can dial PC to PC !

I rephrase: You can
- call from PC to PC for free where both PCs have the software installed
- call from PC to landline for £xx/min

You can't
- call from landline to PC

And today with broadband connection being affordable for most people, the quality should be fine. The only problem with 56k is the lag..

Anyway this software is mainly advantageous if you call abroad. In the UK you can call for free with some phone companies, or with BT it costs 5.5p an hour which hardly breaks the bank.

You can call a pc from a landline - you just need to obtain a virtual phone number!PCs don't work at all without software! The voip service I use charges a penny a minute for calls worldwide (with exceptions) so '£xx/min' = 0.01!A lot of people can't even receive broadband where they live even if the cost is piffling to them!My BT bill does not equate to 5.5p an hour and is no trifling matter!Vagueness and insouciance are qualities I much admire so well done Jennifer!

Andy Parker, I did say "if it's the one I'm thinking about" didn't I ?? So what are you argueing about ?

The software I'm talking about does NOT allow for calls from Landlines to PCs, I can't talk for the ones I don't know about !

And I'm sorry to say but the most it will cost you to call in the UK in the evenings and weekends is 5.5p per hour with BT option 1, it will be free at these times with option 2, and it will be free at anytime with option 3.
So if your BT bill is higher than £25.50 per month (except calls abroad and on mobiles) then you didn't choose the best option for yourself.

Arrogance is an art not everyone can master, well done Andy Parker.

If your talking about phone bills just look at the 18866 number. For 1p you can call anyone for as long as you like only on landlines (i think) the only problem is that a prefix has to be dialed everytime.

However, MMTel (.co.uk) supply a product for 14.99 that eliminates the need for the prefix - it does it for you. So you can spend any amount of time on the phone to family and friends even without a pc (but no pictures are available)...

blocker - 18899 is similar so BT will need their loyal customers (like Jennifer).

True. But with one of the MMTel dialers you do not have to dial the prefix. The dialer never forgets. You can get one to be preogrammed or have a cheaper one that no programming is required. Just plug and play!

The services are mushrooming. There is now a service which allows you to take your fixed line number with you (though this is not completely free). As an LL I would rather offer a cable for broadband than a fixed phone line (I'd rather have one too if I take up a tenancy). With regard to the 18866 dialler I am a little mean so I would rather program the buttons on the phone - £14.99 does seem a lot for what you actually get.

Yes for 1 person knowing what he needs to do it may seem excessive. But for those who have children and married it is a lot for all members to remember to dial 18866 each time. Thus the dialer does the work. However as statedt these services are mushrooming so MMTel has a dialer that does not only the 18866 but other prefix's aswell so if one wished to change carrier instead of remembering 19635 or what ever... the dialer does the work for the user.

blocker - I have included the prefix on all my stored numbers so I can speed dial without having to dial 18866 at all, making the dialler on offer completely redundant.

I agree if you can programm your phone to call numbers it is worth it. But for those who call different people on different basis it might be of some help. That's all I am saying.
