Planning permission: I recently bought a commercial property with 3 flats, and one bed flat at the rear of the shop. The pervious owners used this one bed flat for rental purposes rather then a store room. Now my problem is since I purchased this property the council have been on my case telling me that I cannot rent it as a flat rather I have to keep it as a store room. Now, my problem is can the council stop me from using it as a one bed flat, because they have given me 60 days to comply with there notice if not they reckon they can take charge of my property, which I find strange. Also does the council have a legal duty to inspect peoples property without given a notice? Because this person clearly did not give me any notice.

You have not given all the details here. What reasons have the Council given - is it because there is no planning permission for the use as a flat?
Councils don't take kindly to people who do conversions without permission. If it does have planning approval, which sounds doubtful, does it fully comply with the building regualtions?

Surely the solicitor should have picked up on this at the time when you purchased?
