A short Rant!!

Can we please keep topics on course and not complain about spelling etc on the thread..... please post issues you have with someones spelling and or grammer on here.

I am no angel ... I know my spelling and grammer are terrible but to comment on a thread and take it off course is very frustrating.

Sometimes topics are only moved up because someone is having a go about the above issues and not keeping them on track.

Personally so long as a post can be read what is the issue!

I agree. Sometimes it is a little light hearted banter, which is obviously fine, but when I keep reading 5-10 posts in a row about the bloody spelling and grammar, totally off topic, it gets somewhat tedious.

I must confess to having been guilty of the occasional mistake, as Lawstudent has kindly brought to my attention in the past.

While sometimes it could be construed as obstructive and/or insulting, some of the threads are so bad I can't bear to read them.

I appreciate that it is petty, but a quick copy, paste and spell check doesn't take much time.

Perhaps I am just mean spirited!

mjpl - you are not being at all mean-spirited or petty and nor, I hope my detractors will accept, am I. The problem is that peculiar spelling and/or grammar can be very distracting. Some of the worst culprits, in my experience, are estate agents, whose credibility is not exactly enhanced. Sadly, spell check is an incomplete solution as it will only tell you if a word does not exist - it won't point out if you've used the wrong word. Ultimately there is no substitute for caring about such things and putting in a bit of extra effort ... dyb dyb dyb :)

I recently noticed this old thread pre-dating my membership.
How reassuring that I'm not the only stickler for accuracy.

Sadly, you see poor spelling everywhere. The latest example was my local garage.

They have a sign saying: 'Shop at you're local store'

How about 'Happy Birthday Neice' which I actually saw on a card in a shop today!

Almost every surveyor and architect, when dealing with windows, uses the spelling "cills".
I'm going to complain to Silla Black- it causes me a lorra lorra annoyance.

Oh, they've changed the sign; it now says:

'Shop at you'r local store'

This is the dreaded Grengrocers' Apostrophe. I bet that Lynn Truss won't shop there now.

I can understand some poor harassed shopkeeper making silly mistakes with a handwritten sign but this has been done by a 'professional' signwriter! They are big and very permanent signs.

To make it worse there are a grand total of four of these signs scattered all around the garage and ALL with the same mistake. You just can't get away from it. :o

But love her title joke : Eats, shoots and leaves

A panda walks into a café. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and proceeds to fire it at the other patrons.

“Why?” asks the confused, surviving waiter amidst the carnage, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

“Well, I’m a panda,” he says at the door. “Look it up.”

The waiter turns to the relevant entry in the manual and, sure enough, finds an explanation. “Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves.”

It must be An-Another joke. Why DO pandas have double-barrelled names anyway? It's not very chi-chi.
